MEET THE ORANGES

PARSON BROWN Named after Reverend N. L. Brown, Parson Brown oranges originated from a seedling at the Reverend's Florida home in 1865, which had traveled all the way from China. They were Florida's leading orange variety until the 1920s. Parson Browns have thick pebbled rinds and are especially juicy.

TEMPLE Temple oranges, which release a refreshingly sweet aroma, have vibrant, sunset-colored flesh. These cold-sensitive oranges were found growing wild in Jamaica in 1896, and are thought to be a mandarin-orange hybrid. They are named after W.C. Temple, a former Florida Citrus Exchange manager.

VALENCIA Though their origin is widely disputed, Valencia oranges were introduced to Florida in the 1870s. They account for about 50% of the fruit crop and are the principal oranges used for processing in florida. These late harvest oranges have thin rinds, bright orange flesh and are nearly seedless.

HAMLIN Hamlin oranges are one of the most resilient and cold-tolerant varieties, which is a notable fact considering they only came into existence by chance in 1879. These juicy and almost seedless oranges were developed on a large scale in their native Florida. They are very sweet with little acid.
